It was the most famous gathering in English literary history. In May, 1816, Lord Byron and Percy Shelley rented neighbouring houses on the shores of Lake Geneva.
One rainy day, Byron came up with an idea - one that was to change the course of literature. “We will each write a ghost story,” he declared.
His companions – the dazzling poet Shelley and his 18-year old mistress Mary, the handsome, neurotic doctor Polidori, and Byron himself – on the run from England after an incestuous affair – all took up the challenge.
Over the course of that wet summer by the shores of Lake Geneva, the novel Frankenstein – conceived by Mary Shelley after a nightmare – was born; while Byron began one of the first Vampire stories ever written.
But what happened to the original tales the brilliant companions told one other during the gloomy Swiss evenings? In the Ghosts of Geneva Kate Hoyland reconstructs them, and the fascinating events – and interwoven lives – of that extraordinary summer.
In the second book of the "Ghosts of Geneva" series, Lord Byron's Demon, the glamorous poet begins his tale. He recounts meeting the charismatic Hunt, a fellow aristocrat who befriends and accompanies him on his eastern travels. On Byron's return to England his fame, and his misdemeanors, catch up with him. But Byron's waking up to find he was famous will be nothing compared with the reappearance of Hunt.
Mary Shelley knows that any story attached to Byron is already being inflated into myth. Is Hunt really a "foul feeder," as Byron says? And does Byron know more about Vampires than he is letting on?
Ghosts of Geneva is the second in a brilliant series of novellas certain to appeal to fans of gothic literature, devotees of Victorian fiction, and followers of historical novelists such as Sarah Waters.
Kate Hoyland is the author of the gripping novel, The Icarus Diaries. For many years she was a producer for the BBC World Service, specialising in Asian and International news. She now lives in London with her young son.

Byron Demon Ghosts of Geneva Book 3 eBook Kate Hoyland Reviews
A short but well crafted story. The personality of Byron dominates and set-up will be of interest to those interested in literature and romanticism. Book is part of series it seems but read this in isolation from first book and it was fine. The story isn't scary as such, but it is gripping and more intelligent and literary than most vampire tales. Recommended.
A nice blend of literature and a fireside ghost story. The author's portraits of Mary Shelley and Byron are excellent. Although a ghost/vampire story there is still an air of authenticity in the writing. It's difficult to know where fact ends and fiction starts in some places. A very strong kindle novella (and great series in the making). A must read for lovers of romanticism and Byron in particular, but fine for general readers also.
Kate Hoyland's sequel to `Mary Shelley and the Animatron' doesn't disappoint and powerfully evokes the mystery and romanticism that surround Shelley, Byron and their entourage. From the opening claim to be Mary Shelley's personal journal to the tantalising closing line, the unsettling atmosphere and blur between fact and fiction intrigues and chills the reader. The interplay of Mary's journal and the ghost story itself makes you feel that you too are present, listening to Byron's voice. Its short length and suspense means it is easily read in one sitting and although some factual references can seem a little forced, Hoyland's ability to conjure the Villa Diodati setting makes for a captivating pleasure.
`Could it be that his story was indeed true?' The year is 1816 and three of the 19th Century's most important literary figures, Lord Byron, Percy and Mary Shelley, are spending the summer together and passing the time by telling their own ghost stories. Kate Hoyland compellingly reconstructs the famous holiday through Mary Shelley's fictional diary entries, offering the reader a persuasively realistic vignette of Byron's charismatic mystique, while also fleshing out the background behind the creation of Mary Shelley's own dark masterpiece, Frankenstein. Hoyland weaves Byron's chilling narrative about his ill-omened travels with an eccentric fellow aristocrat, who turns to have vampiric tendencies and designs on Byron's own friends, into a dramatization of Mary Shelley's state of mind after the death of her baby and estrangement from her father. Through Mary Shelley's eyes we too wonder whether Byron is haunted by a physical demon or rather by his own tendencies which have forced him into exile. Hoyland inhabits Mary Shelley's voice very convincingly and creates a chilling atmosphere, which will surely appeal to fans of Gothic literature and those with an interest in Byron or the Shelleys.
Great Sequel.
I read the first part of this series based on Mary Shelley and her story of Frankenstein and enjoyed its mix of literature meeting ghost story. Byron makes an engaging protagonist and narrator for this autobiographical tale. He is a flawed figure, with a brilliant mind.
Would recommend this novella to both avid readers of Gothic fiction and general fans of ghost stories or Romantic literature. Hoyland uses the device of returning to Mary Shelley's voice well to heighten the suspense. The series is developing momentum. Looking forward to next instalment.
